Otoscopes

The otoscope is a medical instrument with a light beam used to visualize and examine the external ear canal and the eardrum. It helps us determine the cause of some pain or hearing loss, as well as the possible existence of foreign objects in the ear canal.

It consists of a handle for holding, which contains the batteries, and a head ending in a disposable plastic cone. This cone emits light and has a low-power magnifying glass to enlarge the observed images.

There are mainly three types of otoscopes:

    - Halogen light otoscope: This type has a light bulb located in the head. They are the most economical, but the bulb obstructs part of the doctor's vision.

    - Fiber optic otoscope: This type provides excellent illumination and a completely clear field of view, free of shadows or reflections.

    - LED otoscope: With the same characteristics as fiber optic models, but with a more powerful light due to the LED technology. It also guarantees low power consumption and long battery life.

Ophthalmoscopes

The ophthalmoscope is a medical instrument designed to view the back of the eye, including the retina, optic disc, choroid, and blood vessels, to determine if the eye is healthy or if it may have a disease.

Its operation is based on the reflection by mirrors of a light beam that goes to the patient through various fundus lenses.

They have two main parts: a handle for gripping, which houses the batteries, allowing the emitted light power to be reduced or increased, and a head made up of a set of lenses with different diopters.

As with otoscopes, the emitted light will be a determining factor when choosing the most suitable one for our needs. The LED light model provides the clearest and most precise visibility.
